The Market Garden green carbon footprint sustainable farming project, green patient therapy, patient rehab in Mitchells Plain at the Lentegeur psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape.
The Market Garden
This is South Africa’s trail blazing, vocational market garden project. A first of its kind this farmer development amongst the psychiatric patients at the hospital is regenerating the land, growing healthy food and healing the people involved.
How we work:
The Lentegeur Market Garden is the vocational training arm of the Spring Foundation based at Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital, Mitchells Plain, Cape Town.
The core focus of the project is to grow the psychiatric patients at the hospital, to become experienced market gardeners who are able to re-enter society as a result of being healed through their work on the land and who are now equipped to offer their community skills that make them an asset.
The access to fresh produce with a high nutritional value, produced locally is a cornerstone to any community’s health and wellbeing. Market gardening offers realistic solutions to enable marginalised communities to grow as much of their fresh produce as possible using ecological methods. Currently small scale farmers produce over 70% of the world’s food needs. (Food and Agricultural Org of the UN – April 2013)
Growth and regeneration:
The market garden has behind it four years of exponential success and its increasingly fertile output enables it to operate as a productive and economically viable business unit. The patients are actively involved in growing, harvesting, packaging and marketing the gardens organic produce within the hospital and to selected local restaurants under contract.
“Farming is just the most fulfilling activity there is… and its especially wonderful to work with a team of people who are committed and enthusiastic” | Brian Joffin

The Spring Foundation at Lentegeur Hospital is a registered NPO and PBO that is using a range of psychosocial rehabilitation and outreach projects to re-establish a sense of hope and recovery through re-connection to the natural world and to community, identity and heritage.
